UBL, CII or another e-invoice format (.xml, .p7m), or a PDF with embedded XML (Factur-X, ZUGFeRD). The file stays on your own computer.

What does the Peppol validator check?

The Peppol validator checks your e-invoice in three steps. It uses the same official rules as Peppol Access Points. It is free and you do not need an account.

  1. Structure: does the XML file match the official schema (XSD) of its format, such as UBL 2.1 or CII?
  2. European standard: does the invoice meet the EN 16931 business rules? For example, mandatory fields, code lists and calculations.
  3. Peppol and national rules: does it follow Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 and, where they exist, the national rules, such as XRechnung, Factur-X or NLCIUS?

In addition, the validator detects the format by itself and covers e-invoices from 22 countries. See e-invoice formats by country for the full list. No invoice at hand? Then try one of our test invoices. If you get an error, our guide to Peppol error codes explains what went wrong and how to fix it.

Frequently asked questions about the Peppol validator

How do I validate my e-invoice?

Keep the default option selected and drop your XML file in the box. Within a few seconds you see any errors and warnings, and a readable view of the invoice that you can download as a PDF.

Which documents can I validate?

UBL invoices and credit notes under Peppol BIS Billing 3.0, self-billing documents, invoices against the European standard EN 16931 only, and the Peppol post-award documents for ordering and delivery, such as orders, order responses, despatch advices and catalogues. The validator also recognises formats from other countries, such as XRechnung, Factur-X, FatturaPA and Facturae.

What exactly does the validator check?

Whether the XML is valid and whether it meets the business rules (Schematron) of EN 16931 and Peppol BIS. These are the same rules Peppol Access Points use. In addition, the validator first checks the structure against the official XML schema (XSD).

What is the difference between an error and a warning?

An error means the document breaks a rule, so an Access Point is likely to reject it. A warning points to a possible improvement but does not block the document.

What are outdated versions?

OpenPeppol publishes new versions of the rules several times a year. During a transition you can also test against the previous release by ticking “Show outdated versions”.

Does my invoice leave my computer?

No. Your browser loads the rules and runs the validation on your own computer. We never upload or store your invoice, which makes the tool suitable for confidential documents.

Why can an Access Point give a different result?

An Access Point may use another version of the rules or add its own checks. Its validation always decides whether the network accepts a document.

More background on how the tools work is on Peppol tools. We use the most recent publicly available rules. The result is an aid, not a guarantee that every recipient or Access Point will accept the document.

Which rules does the Peppol validator use?

The Peppol validator uses the official Schematron rules that OpenPeppol publishes for Peppol BIS Billing 3.0, together with the CEN rules of EN 16931. We update them every week, so you always test against the current release.
