Peppol ID lookup and explainer

A Peppol ID is the address of a business on the Peppol network. With this free tool you paste a Peppol ID, a company number or a technical document type, and we explain every part. You see right away which scheme it uses, whether the check digit is correct and under which other IDs the same business can be reached.

Examples:

How is a Peppol ID built?

Every Peppol ID has the form scheme:value. The scheme ID has four digits and tells which kind of number follows. For example, 0208 stands for the Belgian enterprise number, 0088 for a GS1 GLN and 0106 for a Dutch Chamber of Commerce number. Then comes the value: the number itself, without dots or spaces. Technically there is also a fixed prefix, iso6523-actorid-upis::, but in practice you can leave it out.

The four digits come from the international standard ISO 6523. In addition, Peppol uses a few codes of its own that start with 99, such as 9925 for the Belgian VAT number. You find the complete list in our Peppol code lists.

Which Peppol ID do Belgian businesses use?

Peppol IDWhatAdvice
0208:0123456749Enterprise number (CBE)Recommended, always register
9925:BE0123456749VAT numberOptional, next to 0208
9956:0123456749Old scheme for the enterprise numberRemoved, do not use

A business can be registered under more than one ID, and each ID can sit with a different service provider. Moreover, the sender’s software decides which ID it uses. So check both with the Peppol checker.

Check digit: how to know a Peppol ID is correct

Many numbers contain a check digit. For the Belgian enterprise number, the last two digits are the result of a modulo 97 calculation on the first eight. As a result, a typo almost always stands out. A GLN uses a weighted sum modulo 10, and a French SIRET number uses the Luhn algorithm. The tool shows the calculation step by step. If the check digit is wrong, Peppol validation rejects an invoice with that ID, for example with error PEPPOL-COMMON-R043.

Explain document types and processes too

Besides a participant’s Peppol ID, you also meet long document type and process identifiers in SMP registries and error messages. Paste one into the tool, and we split it into syntax, root element, specification and version. We also tell you whether it is on the official list and still active. For instance, you see that a Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 invoice is a UBL invoice that also follows the European standard EN 16931.

The data comes from the official OpenPeppol code lists, which we fetch automatically every week. The rules for using identifiers are in the Peppol policies.
